Some Thoughts

Today is my first day of not-having-anything-to-do – my coursework at Harvard is now done, and boy, am I free!

I am listening to a recording of Ravel’s Daphnis & Chloe Suite no. 2 with Montreal/Dutoit … I love it. It really expands into a whole other realm. I’ll explain more on this later, but I think it has to do with the placement of the phrase on the bass, and the fact that everybody in the string section is muted – we really have the opportunity to dig in and play out, but because there are mutes, we don’t have to worry about harsh articulation or over-playing. But plus, the way the passage is written … I’ll provide a scan of the part later so you can all see … you have to either play it in first position across the G & D strings or in what Todd/Portnoi call “the block” across D & A … ok I sound like a bass dork now, so I’ll stop … hahahaha … by the way, WADADA II, one of the tunes I wrote for WAITIKI, is based on this suite.
