Randy Wong: Bio

Randy's yearn to be a professional musician has led him to pursue instruction from some of today's most well-known artists across North America and Hawaii. He has received classical/orchestral instruction from notable bassists such as Edgar Meyer, Edwin Barker (Boston Symphony) Todd Seeber (Boston Symphony), Paul Ellison (Houston Symphony/Rice University), Michael Gorman (Honolulu Symphony), Hal Robinson (Philadelphia Orchestra/Curtis Institute), Irving Steinberg (Rhode Island Philharmonic), Kenneth Harper (Colorado Symphony), Francis Senger (Redlands Symphony) and Jeffrey Turner (Pittsburgh Symphony), and has worked with many prominent conductors including: Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Gunther Schuller, Pascal Verrot, Andrey Boreyko, JoAnn Falletta, Samuel Wong, and Dante Anzolini. He has performed in many orchestras, including the Honolulu Symphony, the Texas Festival Orchestra (Round Top, Texas), New England Conservatory Philharmonia & Honors Orchestra, the University of Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, Kona Symphony Orchestra, and the Maui Symphony Orchestra. Randy was also a Finalist in the 1999 Iolani Concerto Competition, with whom he performed the Dragonetti Concerto at the Hawaii Theatre.


In addition to his classical studies, Randy has long been involved with jazz, contemporary, and Hawaiian music. As a contemporary Hawaiian entertainer, Randy performs with the progressive island style jam band Akamai Brain Collective. In Hawaii, Randy has performed at top local venues including Ward's Rafters, Studio Six, Honolulu Academy of Art, Waialae Country Club, and at the 1998 & 1999 Pro Bowls in Aloha Stadium. He also received mentorship in contemporary improvisation from Noel Okimoto, Arthur Lyman, Byron Yasui, Todd Yukumoto, Tim Tsukiyama, Dean Taba, and Curtis Abe. As a junior in high school, Randy was the bassist for the award-winning Iolani Stage Band, which won top honors at the Texas Christian University Invitational Jazz Festival in Fort Worth, Texas, and toured with the Pearl City Symphonic Wind Ensemble at the Music Educators National Conference in Phoenix, Arizona.

While at New England Conservatory (Boston, MA), Randy studied primarily with Boston Symphony bassist Todd Seeber, researcher Larry Scripp, jazz bassist Cecil McBee and pianist Michael Cain.
